Battle Of Gettysburg

The Battle of Gettysburg, part of the Civil War, took place July 1-3, 1863. It resulted in a Union victory.

Fighting on July 1 involved Union forces under Generals Buford and Reynolds, being driven through the town and settling on the good defensive position at Cemetery Ridge?.

On the second day, Confederate attacks were repulsed at Culp's Hill? and Little Round Top?. The Confederates were successful, however, in driving back overextended Union troops under General Dan Sickles? at the Peach Orchard and Wheat Field, though the could not capitalize on this due to Union resistance in the rocky area of the Devil's Den?.

Pickett's Charge?, on July 3, was a charge of 15,000 men on the Angle, on Cemetery Ridge, in the center of the Union line. It was the "high tide of the Confederacy".

Following the battle heavy rain hindered the Union pursuit and the Confederates were able to slip back into Virginia.
