FloridaFlorida is a state in the United States. It is located on a peninsula at the extreme southeast corner of the country. It is also known as the "Sunshine State", and is known for its warm climate, orange production, and the city of Miami. Disney World is located in Orlando, Florida. Florida is home to the Everglades swamp, a habitat rich with diverse animal and plant species. Alligators live there. Along the coast of Florida live endangered manatees. Florida was originally part of Spain, but was ceded to the United States. The oldest European settlement in the United States is at St. Augustine. In the 19th century, the Seminole Wars were fought in Florida, with the United States sending forces against the Seminole Indians who took refuge in the swamps, waging a bitter guerilla campaign that lasted for decades. A small area near Boca Raton was settled by Japanese who introduced pineapple growing to the region. |
