Free French - Encyc

The Free French were a group of French armed forces who refused to surrender to the Germans during World War II. Their leader was Charles de Gaulle, a low-ranking general who escaped to England on an airplane as the Germans were overrunning France.

While Vichy France collaborated with the Germans, the Free French worked to retake the colonies and then metropolitan France itself.
