Haber Process

The Haber process provides a method of removing nitrogen from the atmosphere to form compounds. Most of the ammonia? formed in the Haber process is used to make fertilisers such as ammonium nitrate? and ammonium sulphate?.

In the Haber process nitrogen gas from the air and hydrogen gas (obtained from natural gas) are passed over a heated catalyst of iron.

N2(g) + 3H2(g) <-> 2NH3(g) ΔHo = -92.4 kJ/mol-1

Any unreacted gases are recycled.

The reaction is a homogeneous gas reaction.
