The Invasion of Sicily, also known as Operation Husky, was the Allied liberation of Sicily during World War II. The Germans realized that they could not hold the island, and were able to evacuate most of their forces across the Straight of Messina ? to the Italian mainland. 140,000 Italian soldiers were captured.

Mussolini lost much of his prestige during this campaign, and was deposed when the Allies invaded the mainland.
