The Mediterranean Sea is a body of water between Europe and Africa, with a small part of Asia to the east. It connects with the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the Indian Ocean? to the southeast.

The Mediterranean was important in the development of Western civilization, being home to Egypt, Greece, and Rome.
