Monte Cassino

Monte Cassino was a monastery? at the top of a mountain in central Italy, south of Rome. During World War II, it formed the keystone of the German Gustav defensive line.

Allied planners made the difficult decision to bomb the ancient monastery. However, far from driving out the Germans, it created lots of rubble that turned out to be ideal defensive terrain. Many Allied soldiers died trying to take the position.
