United States Supreme Court

The Supreme Court is the highest court in the United States. Under the Constitution, it is equal to the legislative and executive branches of government. There are nine justices in the Supreme Court, and there always have been, except for a brief period when President Roosevelt packed the court during the New Deal.

David Souter's proposed replacement, Sonia Sotomayor, is in the process of being confirmed as of July 2009.
