Algeria

From Encyc

Algeria is a country in North Africa, bordering on the Mediterranean Sea. It takes its name from its capital city, Algiers. It is the largest country by area in Africa.

Algeria was part of the Ottoman Empire from the 16th century until it was annexed by France in 1830. In 1954, the Front de Libération Nationale began a guerilla war that led to independence in 1962, and the expulsion of over a million Algerians with European background.
