Antal Dorati (1906-1988) was a Hungarian conductor.

He at first specialised in accompanying ballets. He made his American concert debut in 1937 and his British one in 1946. He became an American citizen in 1947. He was Music Director or Principal Conductor of many orchestras:

  • 1949-60, Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra
  • 1963-7, BBC Symphony Orchestra
  • 1966-74, Stockholm Philharmonic
  • 1970-6, National Symphony Orchestra of Washington
  • 1977-81, Detroit Symphony

He had a great affection for Hungarian music and conducted the premiere of Bela Bartok's Viola Concerto (1949). He also made the first complete recording of all 104 of Josef Haydn's symphonies.

His last concerts, only weeks before his death, were his "Concerts for Peace" in London, Berlin and Moscow.
