Atlantic Cod

Cod is a type of predatory fish that lives in the ocean. It is common in cool shallow waters such as found in the Georges bank and Grand Banks off the coast of the northeastern United States and Canada.

Cod fishing has been important economically for over five hundred years. It is believed that the Basques might have discovered the new world before Columbus and kept it a secret because of the profitable cod fishing.

In the 20th century cod were overfished and populations have yet to recover to historic levels.

Quote from an ancient Greek

"There is a deep—and usually frustrated—desire in the heart of everyone to act with benevolence rather than selfishness, and one fine instance of generosity can inspire dozens more." - Xenophon

Quote from an ancient Roman

"Who, I ask, ever found salvation through the conquests of Alexander? What city was ever more wisely governed because of them, what individual improved? Many indeed you might find whom those conquests enriched, but not one whom they made wiser or more temperate than he was by nature, if indeed they have not made him more insolent and arrogant. Whereas all who now find their salvation in philosophy owe it to Socrates." - Flavius Claudius Julianus (Julian the Apostate)
