Andrew Johnson

From Encyc

Andrew Johnson was the 17th president of the United States of America. He became president after Lincoln's assassination in the final weeks of the Civil War, and oversaw much of reconstruction.

He was widely villified in the North by radical reconstructionists who thought he wasn't firm enough with the South, and in the South for supporting reconstruction and the rights of freed slaves. He was impeached and nearly convicted, escaping by one vote in the Senate.
