Alfred Yarrow
Sir Alfred Fernandez Yarrow (1842-1932) was a marine engineer and shipbuilder.
Apprenticed in London, he established own firm at Poplar in 1866. He produced improved steam launches and made the first torpedo-boat in 1876. He later constructed vessels for most of the World's large navies. He constantly carried out systematic experiments and speed trials to improve his designs. His work showed detailed ingenuity and foresight. One of his major innovations, the Yarrow straight-tube boiler, was adopted by the Royal Navy.
He transferred his work to the Clyde in 1907, During World War I he built 29 destroyers, and a fleet of shallow-draught gunboats for use in Mesopotamia. For this he was made a baronet in 1916. He was elected FRS in 1922.
He gave large sums to charity and founded Yarrow Children's Convalescent Home, Broadstairs. He also gave generous endowments for research.
