Ayn Rand was an author and theorist who popularized modern free-market economic theory. The fictional characters she created exemplified individual creativity and empowerment, contasted against socialism and communalism. Her family background in Russia and her exposure to filmakers in Hollywood influenced her work. She lived in America in the mid 20th century, and is famous mainly for The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged.
