Battle of Guadalcanal

The Battle of Guadalcanal was a battle between Americans and Japanese during World War II, in the south Pacific. The island of Guadalcanal occupied an important position at the periphery of the Japanese defensive zone. Americans made amphibious landings but were soon cut off and forced to survive with limited logistical support. They built Henderson Field and the Cactus Air Force helped to defend the island.

Over time the US Navy gained the upper hand, reestablished supply routes, and disrupted Japanese shipping. The Japanese were forced to resupply at night, through a region known as "the slot", in operations known as the "Tokyo Express". The starving Japanese eventually lost control of the island and were evacuated.
