Battle of the Philippine Sea
The Battle of the Philippine Sea was a naval battle during World War II, that took place June 19-20, 1944. The Japanese sent waves of aircraft at the Americans but were decisively beaten, with losses so severe the event became known as the "Marianas Turkey Shoot".
Improved technology such as the Hellcat fighter and better training gave the Americans the advantage.
Victory paved the way for a return to the Philippines as well as towards Japan at Iwo Jima.
