Broadband

From Encyc

Broadband is a method to connect to the internet that does not require you to pay phone charges. Unlike dial up connections, you can just connect automatically.

In most countries, this means a saving of the cost of a local call per connection (for example 20 cents saving each time) and can also mean that you can talk on the phone while being on the internet, which means that you don't have to have a 2nd phone line just for the internet. In some countries, such as New Zealand and Germany, it means a lot more, because they had had to pay per minute even for local calls.

Broadband is a relatively new technology, but it is progressing rapidly. Dial up internet is almost obsolete now.
