Burden

A burden is a load that is so heavy or otherwise unpleasant that the person carrying it finds it onerous.

The term is often used metaphorically to denote an excessive obligation, expense or duty. Another metaphorical meaning is the gist or main theme of a book, speech or poem.

A beast of burden is an animal, such as a horse, donkey, mule or camel, used to carry heavy loads.
