C rations

From Encyc
C rations relied on canned food to provide a long shelf life. Note: The "Old Gold" package, at the front, contains cigarettes.

C rations were the name given to the portable daily ration issued to troops in the field.[1] They were only used when they did not have a mess hall, where cooks would prepare meals, for them. Unlike today's meals, ready to eat, which rely on freeze-dried foods, C rations relied on canned food.
