Chemotherapy is a treatment for cancer.

History[edit]

During World War I, the toxic effects of mustard gas on human lymphatic tissue and bone marrow was noted.

Clinical trials with cancer patients were tried in the early 1940s. Investigators at Yale studied nitrogen mustard in 1942.[1] [2]

In Italy, December 1943, an Allied ship carrying mustard gas was bombed by the Germans, spreading sulfur mustard all over the harbor. The Allies kept it a secret because they were not supposed to have chemical weapons so close to the front. Lieutenant Colonel Stewart Francis Alexander reported the effect of the gas on white blood cells.[3]
