A coach house is an outbuilding, built near a rich person's house, to house their horses and their horse powered transport. Only rich people could afford to maintain a carriage. The coach house had to be large enough to protect the owner's carriage, or carriages from the elements. It had to provide stalls for the horses to draw the carriage, space to store food for the horses, space hold the tools required to maintain carriage, and care for the horses. Often the staff assigned to maintain the horses and carriage slept on a second floor above the carriages and horses.
