Cod

From Encyc
Atlantic Cod

Cod is a type of predatory fish that lives in the ocean. It is common in cool shallow waters such as found in the Georges bank and Grand Banks off the coast of the northeastern United States and Canada.

Cod fishing has been important economically for over five hundred years. It is believed that the Basques might have discovered the new world before Columbus and kept it a secret because of the profitable cod fishing.

In the 20th century cod were overfished and populations have yet to recover to historic levels.
