Cotton gin

The cotton gin is a machine that separates cotton fibers from the seeds. The inventor was Eli Whitney. It made widescale cotton farming in the deep South possible, leading to a revival in slavery and a shift in the slave population from the older tobacco farming areas of the upper South to areas in the deep South such as Mississippi and Alabama.
