David Lynch was an influential American film director.[1]
Lynch's idiosyncratic style
[edit | edit source]While Lynch directed some films that seemed conventional, like the 1984 Dune, other film and television work, like Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive, are celebrated for being cerebral challenges for viewers.[1]
Health
[edit | edit source]Lynch suffered from serious health issues in his later years.[2] Lynch, who started smoking when he was 8 years old, was diagnosed with emphysema in 2020. Lynch said he struggled to quit smoking for the next two years, finally quitting in 2022.[3][4] Lynch died on January 15, 2025.[3][4] The exact cause of his death was not immediately released. News of his passing was met with praise for his influence from across the film industry.[1][5]

Ironically, Lynch liked to describe Eraserhead as his Philadelphia Story – not the charming romcom with Stewart, Hepburn and Grant, but a tale inspired by his time living in the most violent and crime-ridden neighbourhoods in the city. He had lived all over the US, after being born in Montana, but kept that adorable, sing-song midwest accent throughout his life.

But, he admits, “what you sow is what you reap.” Four years ago, the Mulholland Drive director was diagnosed with emphysema, a chronic lung condition that causes shortness of breath and which is a type of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD.

'Yes, I have emphysema from my many years of smoking. I have to say that I enjoyed smoking very much, and I do love tobacco - the smell of it, lighting cigarettes on fire, smoking them - but there is a price to pay for this enjoyment, and the price for me is emphysema,' the Eraserhead director wrote.

"If there's any major change that has taken place over the last several decades, it's that genre films have become the absolute talisman for the way that cinema can actually tell stories," Gorber said, giving large credit to the success of Lynch's surreal productions.
