Death comes to Pemberley
The novel Death comes to Pemberley is a sequel to Jane Austen's celebrated Pride and Prejudice.[1][2] Jane Austen wrote Pride and Prejudice, a comedy of manners, in 1813, and popular mystery novelist P.D. James wrote her sequel in 2011.
plot
[edit | edit source]Pride and Prejudice, written from the point of view of plucky, witty, Elizabeth Bennet, has her refuse a surprising marriage proposal from Mr Darcy, only to change her mind, after falling for him after he reveals fine qualities. Death comes to Pemberly is set years later, and is written from Darcy's point of view.[2]
The Darcys have invited numerous guests to a ball at their country estate, Pemberley, not expectinng Elizabeth's scandalous baby sister, Lydia to show up, together with her scandalous husband, George Wickham.[2] Then Wickham is accused of murdering Captain Denny, his best friend, on Darcy's estate. Even though Darcy and Wickham have hated one another, since adolesence, Darcy defends him, because he believes Wickham is innocent of this particular crime.
