Detroit Windsor Tunnel

The Detroit Windsor Tunnel is a 1,573 metres (0.977 mi) long road tunnel, under the Detroit River, connecting Detroit, Michigan to Windsor, Ontario.[1]
The tunnel is not tall enough for large trucks, like 18-wheel trucks.[2] The tunnel has one lane in each direction.
As of January 2, 2026[update] it costs $9.25 USD to cross using the Detroit Windsor Tunnel.[3]

The Tunnel is 5,160 feet long (1,573 meters) with a height clearance of 12 feet 8 inches (3.86 meters). The roadway is 22 feet wide (6.7 meters) and allows for two lanes of traffic in opposite directions. The maximum depth of the roadway beneath the river surface is 75 feet (22.8 meters).

That’s because the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, which links the downtowns of Detroit and Windsor, has low ceilings and sharp curves at its portals that prevent full-sized tractor trailers from using it.

Effective Jan. 5, 2026, the Detroit Windsor Tunnel will implement a toll rate increase of $0.75 from $8.25 USD to $9 USD. Motorists enrolled in the pre-paid program will see the toll increase from $8 CAD to $9.25 CAD.
