Dirt

Dirt is the stuff the ground is made out of when it isn't rock or sand. Dirt consists of broken down particles of rock mixed with organic matter from decayed plants and animals.

In some contexts, dirt has an unclean connotation. However, in others it is simply synonymous with soil, e.g. "a dirt road" or a "shovelful of dirt".
