Dutch East Indies

The Dutch East Indies was a chain of islands owned by the Netherlands from the 17th through the 20th centuries. It is in the Indian Ocean, and today mainly consists of Indonesia. The islands were profitable because of spice production, and later being a source of petroleum.

They were occupied by the Japanese during World War II and the Dutch briefly reestablished control afterwards. Then they became independent.
