El Alamein
El Alamein was the site of several battles during World War II between British forces in Egypt and the Afrikakorps under General Erwin Rommel. Rommel had been successful in driving back the Allies to the last defensible position before Egypt and the Suez Canal, but his army was vulnerable at the end of a long tenuous supply line. When the initial assault failed, the Germans dug into defensive positions and laid mines.
British general Bernard Montgomery steadily built up an overwhelming force and then launched a devastating offensive which drove the Axis west permanently and captured large numbers of Italian and German prisoners. It was the decisive turning point of the war in North Africa.
