Encyc:Scope

An Encyclopedia... and a dictionary? all in one?

Encyc:Expanding the definition of what an encyclopedia is and can be?

I like the idea that the intro to every article should contain a concise definition of the term. I think this is what traditional encyclopedias do. However I'm against the move to put five different pronunciations and ten different language translations in the intro to every article. Maybe there should be an easy link to it.
I agree Encyc should have a large scope. I want every nationally-advertised product in here. Unlike Wikipedia, we can have articles like Quaker State and Garden gnome, and tell the deletionists to get lost.
Example of dictionary-nerds running amock: History of China - now is it really necessary that in a "History of China" article nearly the first thing the reader sees is how to spell "Yellow River" in Chinese? I'd be willing to bet this type of thing shoots the reading level through the roof, and since we're trying for approximately the reading level of USA Today, Wall Street Journal, or The New York Times it would be inconsistent with the goals of Encyc.
