Felix Aylmer
Sir Felix Aylmer (Felix Edwrd Aylmer-Jones, 1889-1979) was an English actor and playwright.
He was educated at Magdalen College School and Exeter College, Oxford; he was a member of Oxford University Dramatic Society. He made his first professional stage appearance in 1911 with Sir Seymour Hicks. His career was interrupted by service in World War I, but subsequently he was much in demand for aristocratic and middle-class roles such as lawyers, diplomats and politicians until his retirement in 1976.
He played the abbot in the BBC comedy series Oh Brother! (1968-70) and its sequel Oh Father! (1973).
He also appeared in many British and American films, usually in supporting roles, and sometimes adapted others' plays for the screen (though none of his own plays was filmed). He was President of British Equity, 1949-69 and vice-president, Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, in 1965. He was awarded an OBE in 1950 and knighted in 1965.
