Feudalism

Feudalism is a system of government where nobles pledge allegiance to other nobles, establishing a hierarchy. Local government is delegated to lesser nobles and they are often given a high degree of autonomy. In medieval France, feudalism eventually gave way to absolute monarchy, but it continued in various forms in other parts of Europe.
