Fiji is an island country in the south Pacific. It has a population of about 900,000.
Fiji's two main islands are Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Viti Levu has about 75% of the country's population, including the capital Suva. Fiji also has over 300 smaller islands.
Fiji gained independence from the British Empire in 1970. In 1987 it became a republic.
Fiji has four official languages - English, Fijian, Hindi and Fiji Hindi. Rotuman is also official on the small island of Rotuma. The currency is the Fijian dollar.
Rugby union is the most popular sport in Fiji. Its national team is ranked 9th in the world.
