Vega

Vega (alternatively α Lyrae) is a young bright nearby star.[1] It is the fifth brightest star in the night sky. It is believed to be about 500 million years old. Seen from Planet Earth Vega's pole points directly at us.[2]

Vega is found 25 lightyears from the Solar system, in the constellation Lyra.[3] It is 2.15 times the mass of Sol, our sun.

Vega's spectral type of A0V places it on the main sequence.[4] Astronomers have measured that Vega rotates very quickly -- in a little more than 12 hours, while Sol takes 27 days. Vega has low metalicity, meaning that compared to stars like Sol, when it formed Hydrogen and Helium formed a greater percentage of its composition, with relatively little other higher elements.[1]

As of 2026 no planets have been confirmed to orbit Vega, with some speculation this may be due to its low metalicity.[1] It is confirmed to be circled by rings of smaller bodies, in roughly the same positon as the Solar system's asteroid belt and Kuiper belt.
