Goldbricker

From Encyc

A goldbricker is a lazy, selfish person who pretends to do a job but does a lousy job at it. Usually they are in it for the money or because they have no better place to be. They often pretend that tasks are more difficult than they are, so that they can avoid real work.

The term possibly arose during the middle ages as a pejorative against Jews and others involved in the banking industry, who made their money through financial services rather than owning land, factories, or performing physical labor. Apparently they were overly interested in "gold bricks".

It could also have come from bricklayers, whose lazy assistants would act as though the bricks were so heavy they were made from solid gold.

It may also have come about in the American West when miners coated a brick with gold in an attempt to fool the people they were selling to.

Another possibility is in the military around World War I, when enlisted men were saddled with officers of dubious worth, who wore gold insignia on their uniforms and avoided leadership and dangerous situations.

Wikipedia describes goldbricking as surfing the internet at work.
