Googology

From Encyc

Googology, though not officially accepted by English dictionaries, is the study of the mathematics and the naming of large numbers. The word came from adding the suffix "ology" (the study of) to the word "googol," accepted by many English dictionaries as ten to the power of one hundred, or 10100, considered at one time to be an unbelievably large number. The word was believed to be coined by a pataphysicist named Andre Joyce, who is believed by many to not even exist. Andre Joyce could have coined this term some time between 1978 and 2003; no one really knows. From 2003 to 2008, only Andre Joyce/pataphysics fans called large number study "googology," but in late December of 2008, Fb100z, the user name of a number fan on Wikia, created Googology Wiki, and long-time googologists finally started hearing of the words "googology" and "googologist." One to Infinity author Sbiis Saibian used the word "googology" in his text multiple times. Although the word didn't get accepted by amateur mathematicians until about 2008, people from long ago, such as Archimedes, have been called "googologists" due to their number work.
