Greg Bovino is an American official.[1][2]
President Donald Trump appointed Bovino to be Commander at Large of the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agency.[2]
In January of 2026 there were many incidents where US officials were criticized for being heavy-handed, for treating US citizens widely described as law-abiding in ways that violated their Constitutional rights.[2] There were many incidents where US officials were criticized as violating the rights of immigrants and refugees. And shock and alarm were triggered by two incidents where US officials shot an American citizen. In both of these incidents Trump officials described the deceased as terrorists, who attacked officials, whose shooting of them was justifiable self-defense. However these descriptions triggered scorn, since they were both well recorded in multiple video, that were widely seen as showing the deceased innocence.
Greg Bovino was one of Trump officials who most aggressively defended the officials who shot the civilians.[3] In particular, he continued to call the officials who shot and killed civilians the victims in the incidents
He was first re-assigned, and the dismissed, on January 26. 2026.[2]

Bovino’s sudden demotion is the clearest sign yet that the Trump administration is reconsidering its most aggressive tactics after the killing Saturday of 37-year-old Alex Pretti by Border Patrol agents under Bovino’s command.
