Hair transplant
A hair transplant is a surgical procedure in which hair follicles are moved from one area of the body (the "donor site") to a balding or thinning area of the scalp (the "recipient site"). This procedure is commonly performed to address male pattern baldness, but it is also used for restoring hair to other areas, such as the eyebrows, eyelashes, and beard. Hair transplants often yield natural, long-term results.
History
[edit | edit source]The practice of hair transplantation dates back to Japan in the 1930s, where it was initially developed for burn victims. Modern hair transplant techniques emerged in the 1950s, pioneered by Dr. Norman Orentreich. His discovery of "donor dominance" — the concept that transplanted hair retains its characteristics from the donor site — laid the foundation for contemporary hair restoration methods.
Techniques

[edit | edit source]FUT, often referred to as the "strip method," involves removing a strip of skin from the back or side of the scalp. This strip is dissected into individual follicular units, each containing 1–4 hairs, which are then implanted in the recipient area. While this method can provide a high yield of grafts, it typically leaves a linear scar at the donor site.
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

This method reduces visible scarring and is often preferred by patients who wear their hair short. However, FUE can be more time-consuming and labour-intensive than FUT.
Newer techniques
[edit | edit source]Direct Hair Implantation (DHI): This approach uses a specialised tool to simultaneously create recipient sites and implant hair, reducing handling and recovery time. Robotic Hair Transplantation: This technique employs artificial intelligence to enhance precision in follicle extraction and placement, improving accuracy and efficiency.
Risks and recovery
[edit | edit source]Hair transplants carry some risks, including infection, scarring, and temporary "shock loss," where transplanted hair temporarily sheds before regrowth begins. Recovery typically takes a few days, with most patients resuming normal activities shortly after the procedure. Transplanted hair is generally resistant to balding, offering long-lasting results.
Future directions
