Hamilton, Ontario is a city in Canada, at the western end of Lake Ontario.[1][2]

The city was first settled in 1816.[1][2]

A lagoon, at the very western end of Lake Ontario was protected by a sandbar.[2] The sandbar was cut and the lagoon was dredged, to form a harbour, in 1834.

The first railway line reached Hamilton in 1854.[2]

In 1863 the first Steel mill was built in Hamilton, and it became the most important steel centre in Canada.[2]
