Hobo

A hobo is a traveling homeless person who forfeits most of the comforts of society in order to gain the freedom of being on the road. Hoboes most traditionally travel by rail, hiding between cars and in empty boxcars. They carry their clothes in a handkerchief tied to a stick, and play the harmonica.

Hoboes were most popular in the 1920s and 30s. They invented a hobo code in which they would leave signals near houses, for example where good food was.
