Hockey

From Encyc

Hockey, also known as field hockey (primarily only used in Canada and United States, where Ice Hockey is played regularly - and in those countries they refer to Ice Hockey as simply Hockey!) is a sport that is based on soccer with the same sized field, the same shaped goals and all of the same rules, with the only major difference being that you have a stick and a much smaller ball instead of a large ball. Hockey also prohibits the use of any part of the body, other than the stick to touch the ball.

Hockey does have a few changes in comparison to soccer, with different types of corner hits and penalties that are at times a bit complicated. Also, if a goal is scored from outside of the goal scoring arc, it doesn't count as a goal! Long distance shots don't count!

Hockey is a very popular truly international sport (unlike its compatriot Ice Hockey, which is only seriously played in 2 countries) with some of the better countries being:

According to official history, hockey was based on the Irish sport of Hurling which had origins that are claimed to be independent of soccer, although the similarity of rules and format makes this highly unlikely.
