Hudson Tunnel Project

From Encyc
Barges and cranes mark the location where work is underway on a $16 billion rail tunnel project.

The Hudson Tunnel Project will add two new railroad tunnels beneath New Jersey and Manhattan.[1][2][3][4] As of 2026 two tunnels, both over 100 years old, carry all railroad traffic between New Jersey and Manhattan. After the two new tunnels are completed, infrastructure within the older tunnels will be modernized.

The project was granted a final $6.8 billion USD funding on June 11, 2024.[5] The total cost for the project is projected to be $16 billion USD.

The pair of tunnel boring machines for the project were built in Germany, by Herrenknecht AG, and neared completion by August 2025.[6] The first TBM was completed, and underwent testing, in December, 2025.[7]
