IfMUD
ifMUD (Interactive Fiction Multi-User Dungeon) is a part game, part chatroom online system founded in 1997. Topics of all kinds are discussed on ifMUD, but the most common topic is interactive fiction games. Like an interactive fiction game, ifMUD is a non-graphical adventure game. Unlike most interactive fiction, it is multiplayer. Let's say you are giving a banana to a user named Emily, you can type, give banana to Emily and it will show up in Emily's inventory. Objects can be created, picked up, dropped, given to other people, or, if you are the "owner" of the object, deleted from the game. Signing up to play is free. There is a guest account, so if you want to play a demo before you sign up, you can connect with username guest, password guest; at the telnet or web client, typing connect guest guest. Guests can play, but they can not join special-interest channels; there are channels that have nothing to do with interactive fiction computer games; #politics, #religion, #Wikipedia, #music, #Beatles and many more. Also, activity may take place in any room. If two people happen to be in the same room in the game, they can chat. Most of the chatter takes place in the Adventurers Lounge. Sometimes activity will take place somewhere else. For example, every year in March, the XYZZY (pronounced "zizzy", rhymes with dizzy) Awards are held. The XYZZY Awards are given to developers of interactive fiction games. The XYZZY Award ceremony is in the Auditorium, which is south, then east of the Long Hall, which is east of the Lounge. After-ceremony discussion is also a big off-lounge activity spree, in the Carousel Room Bar and Grill, north of the Long Hall. A common feature of ifMUD is Alex, the robotic parrot that frequently hangs around in the Lounge. It has a dictionary of words that it can be taught by privately chatting (known on ifMUD as whispering) to it. It has become a resource for new users to learn strange ifMUD vocabulary (or interactive fiction vocabulary in general), such as the word "cork nut" or "xyzzy." Another feature is Floyd, a friendly robot that lives in the Toyshop (southwest of the long hall), who is also an interpreter for many types of interactive fiction game files. ifMUD has many items to collect and overall activities in its gameplay.
