Imperial System of measures

From Encyc

The term Imperial System is used to refer a version of traditional weights and measures used in Victorian-era United Kingdom, before it too adopted the metric system

Even though the United States is a republic it is almost the last nation still using the Imperial System.

The ad hoc evolution of the what became the Imperial System was chaotic. Different fields of endevor used a confusing array of measures for similar quantities. For instance land surveyors and mariners used different units for distance.
