The term intelligence refers to the practice of quietly finding information on opponents, or potential opponents. The term is widely used by the military, politicians, and, of course intelligence agencies.

Branches of intelligence

human intelligence information learned from human informants. Some informants are paid, or reveal secrets by accidents. More brutal intelligence agencies may resort to torture.
signal intelligence information learned by intercepting electronic messages, like email
