It's a Wonderful Life
It's a Wonderful Life is a movie from the 1940's starring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed. It follows his life in a small town in upstate New York as he progresses from boy to settled family man.
The movie didn't do particularly well when it was released due to its dark themes, including suicide. The studio let some of the rights lapse and it became one of the few Christmas movies that could be shown on television relatively inexpensively. Over the years it became very popular.
