Jacob Devers

From Encyc

Jacob Devers was an American General during World War II. He commanded 6th army which landed amphibiously in southern France in 1944, then fought its way to Alsace. It had the opportunity to jump the Rhine river and end the war early, but Eisenhower commanded them not to.

6th army had some of the best Allied units, including three divisions who had fought in North Africa, Italy, and the amphibious invasion of southern France. It was organized apart from the rest of the Allied forces and sometimes overlooked in planning and reporting. It operated closely with some Free French units.
