Jupiter Pompadour

From Encyc
Jupiter Pompadour
Occupation slave
Known for owned by a senior official in Upper Canada

Jupiter Pompadour was Canadian slave, held in bondage, in Upper Canada.[1]

Jupiter was owned by Peter Russell, a senior administrator, in Upper Canada.[2] Jupiter's mother, Peggy Pompadour, was also a slave of Russell, while his father had been a slave, in the nascent USA, who won his freedom by escaping and fighting with the British during the American Revolution.[1] His father was also employed by Russell.

The record shows Russell made multiple attempts to sell Peggy and Jupiter, who were disobedient, and ran away.[2][1] The record shows Russell had both of them held in jail, as a punishment. It shows he was tied up and left in one of Russell's storerooms when Jupiter was only 13. It shows Russell tried to sell him, when he was 15.
