Kansas

From Encyc

Kansas is a state in the central part of the United States. It became a state around 1860.

Kansas was the scene of conflict before the Civil War. Originally designated to become a free state in the Compromise of 1820, its fate was renegotiated in the Compromise of 1850 and the idea of popular sovereignty introduced. Southerners from Missouri invaded, inciting violence and voting to make it a slave state. It earned the name "Bleeding Kansas" and was the scene of raids by John Brown, a violent abolitionist.

During the Civil War there were several battles including one of the most decisive cavalry charges of the war, at the Battle of Mine Creek.
