King (chess)

From Encyc

The King is a chess piece. It can move one space at a time in any direction, except when castling when it can move two or three spaces. The King has no value because he cannot be lost or the game is over. When the King is threatened he is said to be in "check". When he cannot escape, it is "checkmate".

A king that leaves the protection of his own pieces and engages in aggressive movement across the board is said to be a "fighting king".
